Why the need for Education around dogs?
Dogs are everywhere in society, and during covid, there was a massive increase in dog ownership in Ireland.
What if we don’t own a dog?
Even if children aren’t living with a family dog, they must know safe approaches around friends’ or neighbours’ dogs and other dogs they may meet outdoors.
Dogs are more prevalent in schools now as service, reading and therapy dogs. It’s important children know how to engage with them appropriately.
Statistics:
Sadly, most dog bites happen to young children under the age of 12, the majority to young boys, often by a dog known well to the child, such as the family dog or a friend or neighbour’s dog. A child’s face is often injured due to their more diminutive stature.
Good news.
Learning simple observations around dogs and warning signs to avoid an incident could often prevent this.
What is the workshop about?
I teach children safe approaches when they are in the company of a dog, whether indoors with a family dog or outdoors with an unknown dog.
*I teach numerous canine body stress signals using fun graphics
*Children learn what to do if a dog runs at them outside.
- The course covers when and where to pet a dog safely.
- The workshops encourage dialogue, discussion, teamwork and critical thinking
- They are fun and engaging,
- With a visual presentation and a team quiz.
- There are demos and role-play. I have small prizes for the children. I use a toy dog. They are unique in content, and there is a significant focus on class participation.
- There are resources for the classroom and the children to take home.
Is this for everyone?
I do workshops for libraries, schools, clubs, organisations, veterinary clinics and resource centres; I also take private bookings. I target all cultural backgrounds and children with different learning abilities. It’s something that your school or organisation can lead the way.
